In this week's blog entry, I will go into "Lucinda" by Elyse Marsh and its use of multimodal elements. To truly grasp these multimodal components, it is essential to initially analyze the narrative tone, which revolves around a directionless journey accompanied by the car and companionship. With this context established, we can look to examine the intriguing use cases of multimodal elements within the narrative.
The first element that warrants attention is the strategic use of music throughout the storyline. This musical backdrop assumes a significant yet supportive role within the narrative's progression. While occasional lyrics may catch the reader's attention, they generally remain subdued. However, a notable shift occurs towards the conclusion, where the lyrics emerge. Remarkably, the song that has been subtly woven into her journey reveals that itself to be an ode to the very journey it accompanies. Titled "The Right Place," this song provocatively queries whether one is situated correctly in life—professionally, emotionally, and existentially. All these had been subjects of the protagonist's contemplation at the journey's start.
Shifting the focus to the visual elements employed, they exemplify a poignant portrayal of the protagonist's protracted journey of self-discovery, punctuated by its spontaneous nature. The narrative employs visual simplicity. It starts by depicting a person resting, showing the tranquil existence that was abruptly disrupted upon her encounter with the pivotal element—the car, which is visually represented in the subsequent image. A sudden shift in visual depiction occurs, presenting the audience with a map illustrating the protagonist's traversal across various states. These cartographic snapshots serve to highlight the multitude of places she has visited. This abrupt stylistic transition aptly captures the essence of her experience—where a serene and relaxed life instantaneously transformed into a whirlwind of exploration across diverse locations.
